Fetting lifts Cougars to buzzer beater win

Ada-Borup's Blake Fetting is stormed by teammates and fans after he sank the game winning shot before the buzzer sounded at the end of Thursday's game against Crookston in Ada.

Throwing up at the game’s start didn’t keep Ada-Borup’s Blake Fetting from contributing to Thursday’s basketball game against Crookston. Little did anyone know, it would be Fetting who would throw up again, except this time he did such a thing in a bit more pleasing manner.

Tied 62-62 with just under 4 seconds to play, Fetting jabbed the ball free from a Crookston ball handler, threw up a 10-foot shot and nailed it to beat the final buzzer and give Ada-Borup (19-3) a 64-62 win Thursday in Ada.

Even with his sickness being apparent, it didn’t stop the Ada-Borup student section from storming the floor to mob the junior guard.

“I just tried poking the ball out, and it bounced right into my hands and somehow I made the shot,” Fetting said.

When questioned about his health: “I didn’t feel well before the game, but I wasn’t going to let that keep me from playing tonight.”

Good thing for Ada-Borup, as it needed all the star power it could get, as it was flat the entire first half.

It also didn’t help that Crookston (11-12) drained a total of 7 triples in the first 18 minutes, as its shooting performance led to the 41-30 lead the Pirates held at the half.

“We didn’t close out well enough to be able to contest Crookston the way they obviously needed to be,” Ada-Borup coach Trevor Stewart said. “Luckily we had some guys step up and lead the rest of the team with their own performances.”

Stepping up was not just Fetting who finished with 19 points, but Joel Merkens, who finished with yet another double-double, as he led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed 10 boards.

Merkens’ indefensible drives to the hoop put the Pirates into fits, not just defensively, but offensively, too.

Crookston hit a cold stretch in its shooting midway through the second half, and with Merkens tirelessly working for rebounds on one end and points the other, Ada-Borup found itself just a point shy from tying the game as a 17-5 run made the score 56-55 with 5:03 to play.

“We weren’t as intense as we should’ve been at the start,” Merkens said. “But once our intensity picked up, it really helped everyone get into a groove and led to good looks we were able to knock down to go on the run.”

Ada-Borup tied the game at 58-58 with 4:01 left, and from that point on, each team’s scores were answered by the other’s own bucket, as four consecutive scores occurred before Crookston failed to make it five, as a 5-footer rimmed out – and another bucket didn’t fall until Fetting made the game’s last with his miraculous play.
