Ada-Borup's Haley Poehler dives for a lose ball among a scramble of players during Saturday's conference title game in Ulen.

Ada-Borup not only can flaunt a perfect season record against conference opponents, but it can continue to claim its perfection through every appearance in the Pine-to-Prairie conference championship basketball game.

In its third year of being played, the title game again went to Ada-Borup. The first championship for the Cougars came by beating Bagley, then Win-E-Mac twice, once last year and now most recently Saturday in Ulen.

The Cougars’ 76-65 victory over Win-E-Mac (22-2) was supported by Megan Kolness who scored a game high 27 points.

The all-purpose player repeatedly hit jumpers and drove to the hole to kick Ada-Borup (22-3) into gear and give it a 15 point lead midway through the first half, 33-18.

“Win-E-Mac forced us to take baseline all game, and I am personally more confident driving the ball there for scores,” Kolness said. “I don’t think I shot as well as I could’ve, but it helps when you have teammates who can step up and hit big shots.”

Totaling 14 points and hitting the big shots Ada-Borup needed was Shaina Stevenson, and she made each attempt count down the stretch.

The 5 foot 1 inch junior confidently stepped up and hit a 3-pointer and then sank a 15-footer to revive what was becoming a stagnant offensive performance for Ada-Borup in the second half.

“We got a little slow on offense, but both Megan and Shaina were able to hit big shots to keep just enough distance from them (Win-E-Mac),” Ada-Borup coach Dave Smart said. “Our 16 point lead was getting cut into by their scorers, and if it wasn’t for some key rebounds and the shots being made, the game may have been a lot closer than what it ended up being.”

The 16 point lead Smart referred to was held by Ada-Borup with just over 10 minutes to play, but it fell to just an 8 point advantage after Win-E-Mac’s Korbyn Ross scored from both down low and beyond the arc. Ross finished with a team high 19 points.

But 8 points was the closest the Patriots would ever get, as Ada-Borup’s offense resurfaced and it started to regain control of rebounds at the other end.

“Win-E-Mac’s a great team with players who know how to score, especially if given the chance more than once,” Smart said. “Fortunately we had the two girls step up offensively and our aggressiveness remained high enough to secure the win.”
